Unlike a lot of other societies, the Nene Valley Astronomical Society does not charge an annual membership
subscription. When the society was first formed, it was quickly realised by the founder members that an
astronomical society could be run without a subscription fee - after all the night sky is available and free to all
and why should a society dedicated to encourage observation of the night sky similarly not be so!
We have managed to keep to this ideal by identifying a number of 'core' activities of the society that can be
offered 'free to all', such as our observing sessions, newsletter, library access and telescope hire scheme.
That way we aim to provide a free service that can be enjoyed by all, with no financial constraint or year long
upfront membership fee being required. As far as we are aware, we are the only society that will not only let
you join the society for free, but let you borrow a loan telescope for free as well!
The only thing we do have to charge for is admission to our meetings to cover the costs of hiring the
premises, inviting guest speakers along and for insurance cover. This however is just £1.00 per meeting,
and you get the chance to hear some of the excellent speakers on our programme and meet fellow NVAS
members. You only pay for the meetings that you choose to come along to!
